About this Rocks & Gems word search

The ground beneath our feet is built from rocks, and rocks are made of minerals โ€” the naturally formed building blocks of the Earth. Geologists sort rocks into three great families by how they form: igneous rocks like granite and obsidian cool and harden from molten magma; sedimentary rocks like limestone and sandstone build up in layers over ages; and others change under heat and pressure into stone like marble and slate. The same forces that shape these humble stones also, given enough time and the right conditions, grow the dazzling crystals we call gems.

Gemstones are simply minerals so beautiful, hard and rare that people have prized them for thousands of years. A diamond is pure carbon squeezed under enormous pressure deep in the Earth; rubies and sapphires are the same mineral, coloured red or blue by tiny traces of other elements; emeralds glow green, amethysts purple, opals with a shifting rainbow fire. Some treasures form in surprising ways โ€” a plain-looking geode can be cracked open to reveal a hollow lined with sparkling crystals, and amber is not a stone at all but ancient tree resin turned to gold. Rock hunting and gem collecting remain a joyful hobby for the curious of every age.

Our rocks and gems word search digs up a whole collection of earthly treasures, from sparkling DIAMOND, RUBY and SAPPHIRE to rugged GRANITE, BOULDER and the fiery VOLCANO. It is a natural fit for an earth-science lesson on the rock cycle, a treat for young rock hounds building their first collection, and a relaxing brain-teaser for anyone who loves the natural world. Print it for the classroom or a rainy afternoon and start unearthing the words.

How to play a Rocks & Gems word search

Every Rocks & Gems word search hides a list of rocks & gems-themed words inside a grid of letters, and your job is to track down each one. On this puzzle the words run across, down and diagonally, so keep your eyes moving in every direction as you scan the board.

On a phone or tablet, drag your finger across a word from its first letter to its last โ€” or simply tap the first letter and then the last letter, and the line fills in between. On a computer you can click and drag, or click the two ends. The moment a Rocks & Gems word is correct it locks in with a colored highlight and gets crossed off the list, so you can always see what is left to find.

Prefer pencil and paper? Tap Print / Save PDF for a clean copy of this Rocks & Gems puzzle, and switch on Large Print from the menu for big, easy-to-read letters. Want a completely fresh board? Tap New puzzle and a new Rocks & Gems grid is drawn from a much larger word bank.

Tips to find every word

  • Hunt one letter at a time. Pick the first letter of a Rocks & Gems word and scan the grid only for that letter โ€” it is far faster than reading every row.
  • Sweep the diagonals on purpose. Diagonal words are the ones people miss most, so once the easy across-and-down finds are gone, deliberately trace both diagonal directions.
  • Remember words can be backwards. On the harder settings a Rocks & Gems word may read right-to-left or bottom-to-top, so check the reverse of every promising streak of letters.
  • Chase the rare letters. A J, Q, X, Z or a double letter inside a word makes it a beacon in the grid โ€” spot the rare letter first, then read outward.
  • Cross words off as you find them. The shrinking word list keeps your attention on the Rocks & Gems words that are still hiding.
  • If a board feels too easy or too hard, change the difficulty or tap New puzzle for a different Rocks & Gems arrangement.
